We have been recruiting children and families with childhood apraxia of speech or severe or persistent speech disorder. You do not need a family history of speech disorder for a condition to be genetically-based. Some gene changes occur for the first time, or ‘de novo’ in the current generation of children with apraxia or other speech disorders.
